Udyam Registration Guide: Apply Online, Update & Status

Whether you are starting a new business or running an existing one, MSME Udyam Registration is the most crucial step to give your business legal recognition and avail of various government schemes.

Previously known as ‘Udyog Aadhaar,’ the government renamed it to ‘Udyam Registration’ on July 1, 2020, transforming the system into a 100% paperless and online process.

In this comprehensive guide, we will explain what Udyam Registration is, how to apply online, how to download or update your certificate, and provide the exact workflow for CSC VLEs.

Udyam Registration – Services, Apply, Track & Official Links

Udyam Registration is an official e-Certificate issued by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), Government of India. It provides your enterprise with a unique identity number called the Udyam Registration Number (URN).

The portal is fully integrated with the Income Tax and GSTIN systems. This means that your business’s investment and turnover details are verified automatically through government databases, eliminating the need to upload financial documents.

Udyam Assist Platform (UAP) – For Informal Micro Enterprises

Millions of small shopkeepers, street vendors, and artisans do not have a GST number. For such Informal Micro Enterprises (IMEs), the government launched the Udyam Assist Platform. Through this platform, small informal businesses can come under the MSME umbrella without a GST number and easily avail of Priority Sector Lending (PSL) from banks.

Guidelines for CSC VLEs

CSC VLEs (Village Level Entrepreneurs) play a vital role in providing Udyam Registration services to local citizens:

  1. On the top-right corner of the Udyam portal homepage, click the “Login via CSC Connect” button.
  2. Log in using your Digital Seva ID and Password.
  3. Once logged in, you can process new registrations for citizens or migrate their old UAM to the new Udyam system.
  4. After registration and verification, VLEs can download and provide the printed certificate to the citizen.
  5. VLEs must clearly inform citizens that the government fee for the certificate is zero, and they are only charging their standard CSC service/printing fee.

Fake Websites Warning (Beware of Fraud)

When you search for MSME registration on Google, several Fake (fraudulent) websites may appear at the top (e.g., udyam-registration-online.org, etc.). These private websites look identical to the government portal and charge between ₹1,000 to ₹2,500 for “consultancy.”

  • Always Remember: The official government website always ends with .gov.in.
  • The MSME Ministry does not charge a single rupee for registration, updating, or downloading the certificate.

Common Problems and Solutions

1. Mobile Number is not linked to Aadhaar, what should I do? Solution: Udyam registration is impossible without an OTP. You must first visit your nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra to link/update your mobile number before applying.

2. Getting a “PAN Validation Failed” error. Solution: This usually happens if you selected the wrong “Type of Organisation.” If you are a sole proprietor, select “Proprietary” and enter your personal PAN. If it is a Private Limited company or Partnership, use the company’s PAN.

3. I have an old Udyog Aadhaar (UAM), do I need to register again? Solution: Yes. The government has invalidated the old UAM system. You must go to the portal, select the option “For those already having registration as UAM”, and migrate your old UAM number to the new Udyam Registration.

4. Can I get multiple Udyam Certificates on a single PAN card? Solution: No. Only one Udyam Registration is permitted per PAN card. If you have multiple businesses or branches, you can log in to your existing certificate and add multiple ‘NIC Codes’ and ‘Plant Addresses’ under the same registration.

Services for VLEs / CSC Operators

The Udyam Registration portal is directly integrated with the Digital Seva platform. CSC VLEs can assist citizens with MSME registration by clicking the “Login via CSC Connect” button on the portal’s homepage or by accessing the service through the Digital Seva portal. This allows business owners who lack internet access to successfully register their businesses and receive their printed MSME certificates securely.
